Kubota code P0336: Crankshaft position sensor abnormality
What it means
The engine ECU sees an abnormal signal from the crankshaft position (NE) sensor. Kubota lists it on common-rail engines such as the L3301, L3901 and L4701 tractors.
Can I keep running?
Keep going carefully, fix soonUsually, if the machine runs normally: finish the job carefully and fix it soon. Stop if the machine derates, overheats, loses power or the code comes with an alarm.
Check first
- Park on level ground, lower the loader, attachment or implement to the ground, set the parking brake, stop the engine and remove the key.
- Note whether the code set after a stall or heavy lugging.
- Inspect the crank sensor connector and wiring for looseness, corrosion or damage.
- Clear the warning and see whether it returns. Clearing the warning on the panel doesn't erase the code stored in the engine ECU. If the fault is still there, it comes back.
- If the code returns, call your Kubota dealer to read the codes stored in the engine computer.
Likely causes
- Engine stalled or lugged down hard (owners report early L3901 software setting it after an rpm drop)
- Metal debris on the sensor's magnet
- Loose, corroded or damaged sensor connector or wiring
- Damage or machining flaws on the flywheel the sensor reads (rare)
The fix
A one-off after a stall may not come back. A returning code usually means the sensor needs cleaning or replacing, or the dealer may update the ECU software. Until it's fixed the engine may be a little down on power and regeneration can be affected.
